What is IT security?
IT security refers to the protection of systems, networks, and digital information from unauthorized access, disruption, tampering, or theft. It includes both technical measures—like firewalls, antivirus software, and encryption—and organizational practices such as access control, training, and security monitoring.
Think of IT security as the physical and digital security of a building: someone guards the entrances, others monitor internal activity, and maintenance ensures everything stays up and running. The goal is to ensure data remains confidential, available, and intact.
Example
When an organization implements multi-factor authentication (MFA), uses a firewall, monitors activity logs, and prepares for incidents, it’s building a comprehensive IT security posture that protects users, data, and systems.
