What is information security?
Information security is the protection of information so that it is not disclosed to unauthorized parties, altered accidentally or without authorization, or unavailable when needed. These three properties are known as confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Information security applies to information in all forms. This can include digital data, paper documents, information communicated verbally, and other information assets an organization depends on.
Information security is therefore broader than IT security. IT security primarily focuses on protecting digital systems, networks, and information through technical and organizational controls. Information security also covers how people handle information, how access is managed, how documents are stored, and which policies and governance processes an organization has in place.
For example, consider a sensitive report. Information security includes protecting the digital file, controlling who can open it, ensuring that its contents are not accidentally changed or altered without authorization, and preventing a printed copy or a conversation from exposing the information to unauthorized people.
Sicra and information security
Effective information security requires more than technical security products. Organizations need to understand which information assets they have, the risks those assets face, and which technical, organizational, and human measures are required.
Sicra helps organizations assess security maturity, develop security strategies, and establish structured security governance. This work can draw on the ISO 27001 standard, the requirements of the NIS2 Directive, and other established information security frameworks. Sicra's CISO-for-hire service also includes risk management, strategic security leadership, and support for information security requirements.
