What is IAM?
IAM (Identity and Access Management) is the practice of managing digital identities and controlling which users, systems, and services can access specific resources. It covers the entire identity lifecycle — from provisioning and changes to deprovisioning.
IAM includes authentication, authorization, role-based access control (RBAC), access requests, and periodic access reviews. The goal is to ensure users only have the access they need, when they need it.
Metaphorically, IAM can be compared to a building’s reception desk and badge system: it determines who is allowed in, which rooms they can enter, and when access is revoked.
