What is GPAI (General-Purpose AI)?
GPAI (General-Purpose AI), or AI models for general purposes, refers to AI models that can perform a wide range of tasks and be used across many different applications. Unlike AI developed for one specific task, a GPAI model can serve as the foundation for multiple types of AI systems and services.
GPAI models can be used to generate and analyze text, images, audio, and other types of content, answer questions, write code, and perform different forms of analysis. Large language models (LLMs) are a common example of models that can be classified as GPAI.
A useful analogy is an engine that can be used in many different machines. The same underlying technology can be adapted and integrated into different solutions depending on its intended purpose. Similarly, a single GPAI model can serve as the foundation for many different applications and services.
