What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence, at a high level, refers to computers that can think and reason on their own, created by humans.

In IT today, AI is about enabling computers and machines to perform tasks that would typically require a human, such as first-line support, self-driving cars, or text generation.

AI can broadly be divided into five categories: data-driven models (machine learning), rule-based models (expert systems), NLP (Natural Language Processing), autonomous systems, neural networks and deep learning (Deep Neural Networks – DNNs), and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Example: When a security platform detects and blocks a phishing attack in real time without human involvement, that is AI in action.

Artificial intelligence is not just a technical matter but also a legal one. Both GDPR and NIS2 set requirements for compliance in companies’ use of AI.
