What is artificial general intelligence (AGI)?
Artificial general intelligence (AGI), also known as strong AI or full AI, is artificial intelligence that is said to be capable of learning, understanding, and applying knowledge across various domains, just like a human can.
In reality, this means that an AGI would be able to perform all intellectual tasks that we humans can, without being limited to specific tasks. An example of such artificial intelligence from fiction would be the replicants in Blade Runner, Data from Star Trek, or HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Are we approaching artificial general intelligence?
Today, we operate with what we call narrow artificial intelligence (ANI). These are limited to performing specific tasks and are bound to these, and cannot process information like humans.
Most people who talk about artificial general intelligence (AGI) provide slightly different estimates. While some believe that we will achieve AGI in 15-25 years, others think AGI will come in 35-75 years, while others believe that we cannot know when it will come. However, the estimates have been getting shorter and shorter.
Will AGI become a future cyber threat?
We must assume that any future technology will be misused by criminals and state actors, just as today’s cyber technology has been. However, we would still advise people to focus on today’s cyber threats. By the time AGI becomes a threat, whoever we are collaborating with in the future will likely have found a way to use AGI in cyber defense.
Sicra and artificial general intelligence (AGI)
Since AGI is still a theoretical concept, Sicra does not provide solutions related to AGI. However, if you want to read about how to address security challenges related to artificial intelligence, we recommend reading the main article on “artificial intelligence.”
With our CISO-for-hire service, Sicra can assist if you want to become NIS2 compliant, including in relation to the use of artificial intelligence.
