What is AISI (AI Security Institute)?
AISI (AI Security Institute) is a research organization within the UK government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The institute investigates security risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence systems. It develops and conducts technical evaluations of advanced AI models to understand their capabilities, which safeguards are effective, and how the technology could potentially be misused. AISI examines, among other things, risks related to cyberattacks, autonomous AI systems, and other capabilities that could have serious consequences.
AISI can be compared to a government technical research and evaluation environment for advanced AI. In the same way that products can be tested for safety before and after they are put into use, AISI develops methods and tests that make it possible to examine how advanced AI models behave, what capabilities they have, and how effective their safeguards are.
Sicra and AISI
AISI's work is relevant to cybersecurity because increasingly capable AI models can both be used to strengthen cybersecurity efforts and provide threat actors with new capabilities. AISI conducts evaluations of, among other things, how effectively advanced AI models can perform tasks related to offensive cyber operations, and researches how safeguards around such models can be evaluated.
For organizations, this underlines the need to understand how AI affects the threat landscape and to establish governance, risk assessments, and security controls around the use of AI. Sicra's work with security strategy, maturity assessments, and security management can help incorporate AI-related risks into an organization's overall cybersecurity efforts.
