What is cyber?
Cyber is primarily used as a prefix in terms such as cybersecurity, cyberattack, and cybercrime. In modern usage, cyber- refers to something involving computers, digital systems, networks, or digital environments, particularly the internet. In English, cyber is also used as a standalone word, particularly in security and defense contexts.
Cyber is therefore not the name of a specific technology or field. Its meaning becomes clearer through the word it modifies. Cybersecurity concerns the protection of digital systems and information, while a cyberattack is an attack targeting digital systems, networks, or data.
Cyber is often used to describe activities that take place in or affect cyberspace, the digital environment formed by interconnected computer systems and networks. This does not necessarily mean that something must take place on the public internet. Internal networks, cloud services, industrial systems, and other digital environments can also form part of the cyber domain.
The term has its roots in cybernetics. Cybernetics derives from the Greek kybernētēs, meaning steersman or pilot. Cyber- later developed a broader association with computers and digital networks, particularly as internet use expanded.
