What is cybercrime?
Cybercrime refers to criminal activity in which digital systems, networks, or the internet are used as a target, tool, or environment for committing a crime.
Some forms of cybercrime can only be committed using digital systems. These include illegal hacking, malware distribution, ransomware attacks, and DDoS attacks. Other forms involve traditional crimes, such as fraud and identity theft, that are committed or carried out on a larger scale using digital tools. Phishing is one method that can be used to commit such crimes.
Motives can include financial gain, information theft, extortion, and other criminal objectives. Cybercrime can target individuals, businesses, and public-sector organizations.
Cybercrime overlaps with the term cyberattack, but the two are not identical. A cyberattack targets digital systems, networks, or data, while cybercrime also includes other criminal offenses, such as online fraud. Hacking is also not necessarily cybercrime, since security testing and ethical hacking can be performed legally with authorization.
