What is DDoS attack?
A DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) is a malicious attempt to disrupt normal traffic to a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a large amount of internet traffic.
This is done by using multiple compromised computer systems from previous attacks, also known as a botnet, to send a large volume of requests to the target.
The motivation behind a DDoS attack is often to limit, slow down, or make the target inaccessible to other users.
Typical signs of such an attack include slower traffic, traffic stoppages, or unusual activity on the target itself.
An example of such an attack occurred in 2022, when a Russian hacker group called Killnet carried out a DDoS attack that affected several major public websites in Norway. This included the websites of the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority and the police, which were inaccessible for periods.
