What is IT (Information Technology)?
IT is short for Information Technology and refers to technology used to process, store, transmit, and use information in digital form.
IT includes computers and mobile devices, servers, software, databases, networks, and cloud services. Together, these make up an organization's IT environment, where different systems and services are connected. The term refers both to the technology itself and to the professional field responsible for developing, operating, and managing these systems.
IT is closely related to the term ICT (Information and Communication Technology). ICT explicitly emphasizes communication technologies, while IT remains widely used as a general term for digital systems and technology.
IT should also not be confused with IT security. IT describes the technologies and systems themselves, while IT security focuses on protecting them against unauthorized access, damage, manipulation, and disruption.
The distinction between IT and OT (Operational Technology) is used in areas such as industry, transportation, and building automation. IT primarily processes information, while OT is used to monitor and control physical processes, machinery, and technical installations.
Sicra and IT
Modern organizations depend on IT infrastructure that is stable, secure, and able to support both current and future requirements. Networks, cloud services, applications, and security solutions need to work together as a coherent environment.
Sicra works across IT architecture, operations, and security. This includes designing network architectures, continuously monitoring and operating networks and related infrastructure through Sicra NOC, and assessing an organization's security maturity.
