What is cloud?
Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services over the internet on a self-service, on-demand basis. Public cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) offer scalable infrastructure, platform, and software services that can be provisioned without investments in physical hardware. From a cybersecurity perspective, cloud computing requires a specific approach to security based on shared responsibility models and cloud-native security controls.
Think of cloud as a modern utility grid for IT services. Instead of building and maintaining your own power plants (data centers), businesses connect to a shared infrastructure where they pay for exactly the power consumption (resources) they need. This provides flexibility and scalability, but also requires a shift in how security is handled since responsibility is shared between the customer and the cloud provider.
