What is Bicep?
Bicep is a domain-specific language (DSL) developed by Microsoft for defining and deploying Azure resources through declarative code. It is specifically designed as an alternative to Azure Resource Manager (ARM) JSON templates, with a more readable and maintainable syntax. Bicep translates directly to ARM templates behind the scenes and therefore supports the entire Azure resource spectrum. From a cybersecurity perspective, this enables consistent, version-controlled, and secure infrastructure in Azure environments.
Think of Bicep as a specialized recipe language tailored for Azure environments. Unlike general IaC tools like Terraform, Bicep is designed specifically for Azure and therefore provides an intuitive way to describe Azure resources. This makes it easier to ensure that infrastructure adheres to security standards and that configurations are implemented consistently across all deployments.
