SASE (Secure Access Service Edge)

SASE brings networking and security together in a cloud-based model where access is governed by identity, context, and policy rather than location.

What is SASE?

SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) is an architectural framework defined by Gartner that combines networking and security functions in a cloud-delivered service model.

Traditionally, organizations have used separate solutions for functions such as firewalls, VPN, secure web gateways, and access control. In a SASE architecture, these capabilities are consolidated into an integrated platform, typically delivered as a cloud service, often referred to as Security Service Edge (SSE) combined with networking capabilities such as SD-WAN.

This enables secure access to applications and resources regardless of where the user or device is located, whether in the office, working remotely, or accessing cloud services directly. Instead of routing traffic through a central data center for inspection, security policies are enforced in distributed cloud nodes close to the user, which can reduce latency and improve the user experience.

A more precise way to understand SASE is as a convergence of networking, for example SD-WAN, and security services such as ZTNA, CASB, SWG, and FWaaS, where identity, context, and policy govern access rather than physical location.

Sicra and SASE

SASE represents a central framework in the evolution of modern network and security architecture, especially in organizations with increased use of cloud services and distributed work models.

At Sicra, SASE is used as an analysis and design principle in strategy work and transformation projects. This includes:

  • Mapping and assessment of existing network and security solutions
  • Definition of target architecture based on principles for cloud delivery and Zero Trust
  • Selection and implementation of relevant platforms and services

The goal is to reduce complexity, improve the security posture, and establish a more scalable and holistic approach to access and protection of organizational resources.
