Anonymous

Anonymous shows how cyber threats can also come from loosely organized networks without clear leadership or formal membership. The collective has been associated with politically and ideologically motivated cyber operations targeting governments, companies, and organizations.

What is Anonymous?

Anonymous is a decentralized international hacktivist collective and movement associated with politically and ideologically motivated cyber operations. Unlike more organized threat actors, Anonymous has no clear central leadership or formal membership structure.

Individuals and groups can conduct operations under the Anonymous name without belonging to a fixed organization. This can make it difficult to determine who is actually behind a particular operation and whether the activity represents others who use the Anonymous name.

Anonymous has been associated with DDoS attacks, data breaches, information leaks, and attacks against websites. Targets have often included governments, companies, or organizations that participants believe conflict with their political or ideological views. One well-known example is the 2010 DDoS attacks against PayPal after the company stopped processing payments to WikiLeaks.

Groups that use “Anonymous” as part of their name are not necessarily part of the same collective. Anonymous Sudan, for example, is a separate cybercriminal group and should not be confused with Anonymous.

Sicra and Anonymous

Anonymous illustrates that a threat actor does not necessarily have to be a clearly defined organization with known leadership, members, and established methods. For Sicra, it is important to follow both established groups and more loosely organized actors, how they operate, and which organizations or sectors they target.

This knowledge provides context when security events are analyzed and helps organizations understand both the motivation behind an attack and the methods that may be used.

Anonymous has also found its way onto the door of one of our meeting rooms. It serves as a reminder that the threat landscape consists not only of clearly organized and state-sponsored groups, but also of loose networks and actors that can mobilize quickly around political or ideological causes.
