UPS (Uninterruptible power supply)

A UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, protects critical IT equipment and infrastructure when the main power supply fails or becomes unstable. It provides temporary power so systems can remain operational or shut down safely.

What is a UPS (Uninterruptible power supply)?

A UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) is a system that provides temporary electrical power when the primary power supply fails or becomes unstable. UPS systems are commonly used to protect servers, network equipment, storage systems, industrial control systems, and other critical infrastructure from power outages and electrical disturbances.

A UPS typically contains batteries or another form of energy storage that takes over when problems with the primary power supply occur. Depending on its design and capacity, this can allow systems to continue operating until backup power becomes available or provide enough time for a controlled shutdown without data loss or corruption.

A useful analogy is an emergency fuel supply that automatically takes over when the primary supply stops. It is generally not intended to power the infrastructure permanently, but it prevents critical systems from immediately shutting down when the normal power supply disappears.

Sicra and UPS

UPS systems are relevant to cybersecurity and digital resilience because availability is a fundamental part of information security. A power outage can make critical systems, networks, and security solutions unavailable even when the organization is not experiencing a cyberattack.

For organizations operating data centers, network infrastructure, OT environments, or other critical systems, power supply and backup power should therefore form part of resilience, continuity, and risk management. Sicra can support organizations with assessments of network resilience, security architecture, and security across critical IT and OT environments.
