PQC (Post-quantum cryptography)

Post quantum cryptography (PQC) refers to cryptographic methods designed to protect data against attacks from both current computers and future quantum computers. PQC helps prepare digital systems for a future in which today's cryptographic protections may no longer be sufficient.

What is PQC (Post-quantum cryptography)?

PQC (Post-quantum cryptography) refers to cryptographic methods designed to protect information against attacks from both conventional computers and future quantum computers. Sufficiently capable quantum computers could potentially break some widely used cryptographic algorithms, particularly certain forms of public-key cryptography. PQC therefore uses mathematical problems that are considered difficult for both conventional and quantum computers to solve.

A useful analogy is replacing locks before a new type of master key becomes available. Today’s locks may still work, but if future technology is expected to make them significantly easier to open, new locks need to be developed and introduced before that happens. Similarly, PQC is about preparing digital systems for a future in which today’s cryptographic protection may no longer be sufficient.

Sicra and PQC

PQC is relevant for organizations that depend on encryption to protect sensitive information, communications, identities, and digital services over long periods. Transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography requires organizations to understand where and how cryptography is currently used, assess the associated risks, and plan how existing systems can be modernized.

Sicra’s security assessment, strategy, and architecture services can help organizations identify dependencies and risks within existing environments and establish a foundation for future security measures. PQC can therefore form part of a long-term approach to security architecture, risk management, and modernization of digital infrastructure.
