What is vishing?
Vishing, or telephone phishing, is a type of attack where attackers pose as legitimate entities over the phone to trick victims into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords or bank details.
What can you do to resist vishing?
-
Be skeptical of unexpected calls: If someone calls and asks for personal information, be cautious. Legitimate organizations will rarely ask for sensitive information over the phone.
-
Verify identity: If you are unsure whether a call is genuine, hang up and call the organization back using an official number found on their website.
-
Never share sensitive information: Avoid giving out personal details such as bank information, passwords, or social security numbers over the phone.
-
Use technology: Install apps that can identify and block scam calls.
-
Be aware of signs of fraud: Be on the lookout for calls that create a sense of urgency or fear, or that offer something that seems too good to be true.
-
Report scam attempts: If you receive a suspicious call, report it to the relevant authorities or your telecom provider.
