What is digital identification?
Digital identification, also known as electronic identity (eID), is a method for verifying a person’s identity over the internet. This works similarly to physical ID proofs like passports or driver’s licenses, but in a digital form.
An eID contains personally identifiable information and is used to prove that you are who you claim to be. This can be done using passwords, tokens, smart cards, or mobile phones. In Norway, there are several eID providers offering such services, including Norwegian examples like BankID, Buypass, and MinID.
Different forms of digital identification:
-
Username and password: This is the simplest form of digital identification, used on many websites and services such as social media and email.
-
BankID: A widely used eID in Norway that provides access to online banking, public services, and other secure websites.
-
MinID: Mainly used to log in to public services in Norway, such as the Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) and the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).
-
Buypass: Another eID solution in Norway, used in both the public and private sectors, often for health and sports services.
-
Biometric authentication: Uses physical characteristics like fingerprints or facial recognition to verify your identity.
-
Feide: Used by students and staff in the education sector in Norway to access digital learning resources.
